- Transition to university is a challenging phase of life which may have a profound impact on individuals' mental health. This article focuses on an attachment theory perspective of mental health issues of students from different cultural background (Western and Asian groups) during their transition to university. A review of students' mental health problems across cultures is presented. A brief introduction to attachment theory is provided, and the influential role of attachment transfer during university transition is described. The evidence on the link between students' attachment styles and their mental health problems during the transition to university is addressed, noting several differences in research findings from Western and Asian studies on this topic. Overall, it is concluded that in both Western and Asian samples, students' attachment styles play an important role in their mental health during their transition to university. Implications on university counselling service and students' mental health research are discussed.
